Tonsils are two oval shaped pads of tissue seen at the back of your throat. Inflammation of these tissues is called tonsillitis. Tonsillitis may cause swelling of tonsils, adjacent lymph node enlargement and pain during swallowing.
Tonsils may appear red and swollen on throat examination with or without yellow white coatings. Tonsillitis may be associated with fever, bad breath and sore throat. Due to sore throat and difficulty in swallowing children having inflamed tonsils often resist eating their food.
What is the cause of tonsillitis?
Tonsillitis
occurs both in children and adults; however it is common in children. It is commonly
caused by bacteriae and viruses. Group A streptococci are common bacteria [streptococcus
pyogenus] causing tonsillitis.
Why
children are affected more?
Tonsillitis
is immune system’s first line of defense till puberty. Therefore it is more
vulnerable to microbial attack. After puberty this function of tonsils decline. Therefore tonsillitis is not so common in adults.
Does
tonsillitis affect the sleep of your child?
It may cause
difficulty in breathing in some children [obstructive sleep apnoea OSA].Children with enlarges and inflamed tonsils may wake up from sleep with difficulty in breathing.
What are the
complications of tonsillitis?
Untreated recurrent tonsillitis may cause
cellulitis and abscess with pus
formation around tonsils [ Peritonsillar
abscess].
Untreated
Group A streptococcal tonsillitis may cause rheumatic fever affecting heart,
nerves and brain.
Streptococcal tonsillitis can affect skin as well as kidneys [ glomerulonephritis]also.
It may cause arthritis of joints.
Treatment in conventional or modern medicine
Antibiotics are commonly used to treat tonsillitis. However, in intractable cases tonsillectomy or surgical removal of tonsils are done.
How does
homeopathy help tonsillitis?
Homeopathic medicines help to manage acute as
well as chronic tonsillitis. Homeopathy is able to manage most of the cases which are even resistant to antibiotics. However, in severe and recurrent tonsillitis
tonsillectomy operation may be needed. Also in group A streptococcal tonsillitis it is important to prevent the occurrence of rheumatic fever. Antibiotics may be needed in cases not responding to medicines.
Homeopathic
medicines can treat peritonsillar abscess resulting from tonsillitis.
A few
important homeopathic medicines for tonsillitis are :
Calcarea carbonicum -is used in recurrent chronic tonsillitis
