Yogis believe Chin mudra helps you tune into a receptive state , brighten the mood, eradicate ignorance, and stimulate your intuitive powers. Yoga breathing exercises or pranayama like Ujjayi and Sama Vritti Pranayama are practiced in chin mudra.
Chin Mudra is a yoga hand gesture or yoga mudra that is carried out by pressing the tip of the index finger against the tip of the thumb with the palm facing upward. It is used often in the practice of pranayama and meditation. It is the yoga mudra that makes you more aware, conscious of your inner self .
Chin mudra helps to improve concentration, inner awareness and keep you maintain mental calmness.
The name “chin mudra” is derived from two words:
chin = consciousness
mudra = seal, gesture
Chin mudra is also known as” jnana mudra” which means gesture of wisdom or knowledge.
According to yoga philosophy , Chin Mudra hand gesture is symbolic of two things. The circle formed between the index and thumb indicates knowledge received from the universe.
The laterally extended fingers indicate transcending the 3 Gunas [satva,rajas,thamas respectively]to overcome greed, desire, and anger. It is only a symbolic interpretation by yogis.
However, this yoga mudra is very useful to focus attention and improve concentration to make you receptive of knowledge as in the symbolic interpretation.
How to practice chin mudra?
Rest your hands on top of your thighs with your palms open.
· Hold the tip of the index finger with the tip of the thumb, keeping the remaining three fingers lightly extended.
· Relax the back [dorsum]of the hands over the thighs or knee with the palms facing upward.
